The Festival Experience

Music Festivals Live On
grassroots movement

Music festival fans keep the grassroots movement alive

The great American music- festival weekend has long been an important rite of passage for our nation’s youth. Back in the 60s, before Conquer Entertainment’s blog reporter Tim Boehm was even born, the camping side of things – pitching your tent next to someone who, after three days, would either end up a lifelong friend or someone you would gladly see fall into the ‘long drop’ toilets – was as exciting, sometimes more so, than the bands.

The times, however, are a-changing, as no one sings around a campfire anymore. In this week’s blog, Tim  suggests the old school camping model is under threat from newer, fancier, more metropolitan events where everyone can go home after a hard day in the field.

Fair enough. Time is an increasingly precious commodity. The expense of a festival weekend can rival that of a foreign holiday, except with less chance of coming home with a tan.

Keeping the fans on their feet

But you can’t help but worry that making the outdoor gig experience easier and more disposable may ultimately have an impact on the thing that really matters: the music. Anyone who’s endured a wet folk festival in northern California will know the healing power of the perfect set at the perfect time, and how entire audiences can bond with artists for life as they overcome adversity together.

But, while the increasing drive towards shorter, more accessible events – not to mention the rise of golden circles and glamping areas – may ultimately help festival bottom lines, it threatens to rob the festival experience of its most important component: that feeling of community.

After all, if we’re not all in it together at a festival, then we might as well all stay at home. Now, that’s just Tim’s opinion and yours may differ; either way get the conversation started. Conquer Entertainment supports all festivals, large and small, from country venue in the Appalachians to a ‘back of the bus’ city concert.

This is just a small option piece but basically, just get out and enjoy the music wherever you can.

Hey Atlanta! Vixion is in the house

raking it with red hair
Transformed in Atlanta

Pop & Urban Artist: Vision Allure

Brooklyn, Tibet, Philadelphia, Shanghai, and all over. It’s been a busy summer for Conquer Entertainment’s blog reporter Tim Boehm. This week we catch up with him in Atlanta where he met up with Leigh Allure, better known as Vixion Allure. While sipping a latte at the Starbucks at Abernathy Square, Tim mentioned that her tag on Twitter says “Reinventing myself once more…….” and judging by her vivacious personality and positive outlook on life, we totally get it. She says, “People still be hating….nothing new so why give it energy celebrate yourself everyday hour and minute. It’s a party in my mind everyday”. Asked about what her career is doing lately, she replied to Tim that she’s focusing more on the Leigh Allure brand with a mix of Vix (Vixion). Its been almost 20 years since she started playing (started at 13 years old) so naturally her music has evolved. Our blog reporter pointed out some of the big differences between ‘Call Me Danger’ (a mix of urban and electronica) and her latest song ‘1 or 2’ (a mix of pop and rap). Her infectious laugh mix with a thousand yard stare of ‘Watcha sayin’?!! caught Tim off guard for a moment before she laid it all out for the interview; life changes, so guess what?, so does my music, it changes with the moods and whereas I was influenced by Maroon 5 back in the day, now it is life’s experience that influence my music.

Leigh Allure, no walls will hold her back

Like the image above, our blog reporter noticed that she, not only moves around glass ceilings but also glass walls. ‘So true! she responded. Sometimes being a female artist is too challenging in this industry. Leigh definitely has the toughness and perseverance to push herself to the top. This is definitely the kind of artist Conquer Entertainment is motivated to partner with. We promote the aspiring artist and the talents they have to share. Leigh shared that she’s back and forth between Atlanta and Philadelphia where she’s been working with the Transportation Authority (‘hey a girls gotta live she sighs’). ‘Conquer is committed to helping each artist build their careers’ was his reply, and committed we are~!

Keep it real Vixion and we’ll catch up with you real soon. In the meantime, lets all get behind this lady with the pretty smile and the sultry voice. She’s got what it takes.

Until next week, we’ll sign off from our blog reporter in Atlanta and check out the other blogs popping up weekly on the site. Vixion Allure (Leigh Allure) and her music is creating a buzz all over Urban America so take a listen.

Wake Up to The Morning Birds

Folktronica at its best
Jennifer Thorington

Indie / Pop rock / Folktronica Artists: The Morning Birds

Conquer Entertainment blog reporter Tim Boehm, spent part of his life in southern California and one of his favorite things to do was to make the drive up to Idyllwild near the base of the mountains. There he would hike and sample the local art culture. This past weekend, traveling from CE headquarters back out to his next assignment required no GPS or directions. The roads were ver familiar. He was on his way to a small coffee shop to meet up with the members of The Morning Birds for a discussion about folktronica (their special blend of folk music and electronica) and to see what being on our platform has meant to them.

To say that Jennifer Thorington and Samuel Markus, the couple that make up ‘The Morning Birds’, have a full life, is quite the understatement. Not only do they write, produce, and direct their own music but they also do videos and run their own public relations that represents numerous artists and bands.

One of their music videos, “It’s Then You’ll Know”, has soared to over 500,000 views on YouTube. Dang!  Check out why here

Jennifer, above, had been a professional make-up artist for fifteen years but quit to go after her music career. She met Sam, a former Idyllwild Arts film student, in Los Angeles back in 2008. Now, over 9 years and one baby later, they can look back on all the touring through the East Coast, Canada, and working on an album together.

.

Samuel Markus

Sam, above, had the main stay in the groups name of ‘Samuel Markus and the Only Ones’ until they decided to take a break from all the song writing and focus on a new name. After sitting around all night long trying to find one, he came up with ‘The Morning Birds”. It captured the essence of the love they share and how they live their lives; always fresh, always awake, always in the early morning light.

With a new band name, they decided they also needed a new place to call home. They started looking for places closer to nature. LA, with the smog and traffic, was just getting to be too much to deal with and definitely not inspiring their music so a fellow musician suggested that he try out his boyhood home of Idyllwild, CA. It seems to have everything they were complaining they didn’t have. The area was ideal to inspire their unique blend of folk + electronica; they call it folktronica. The eclectic community with the arts and craft stores, local health food stops, and vegan atmosphere contribute deeply to the music and the inspirations they derive from all around them.

Likewise, when they moved over to Conquer Entertainment, they wanted something fresh and new as well. The appeal was the way the platform emphasized ‘life style’ with music. Although they have much to learn, the time on the platform has opened their eyes to the other ways a musician and bands can create revenue by sharing their lifestyle with their fans. Very cool idea!

With their coffees done, they shook hands and after some local salutations were exchanged they stepped out into the cool mountain air. We’ll definitely be hearing more from this energetic couple. So,…. from Idyllwild, CA, Conquer Entertainment’s blog reporters are traveling to their next destinations. Check back next week to see where he’ll be….

In the meantime: The Morning Birds and their music is hitting airwaves and popping up everywhere.

Norway influences the music of Philly

alt-Rock Artist: Cris Valkyrie

Conquer Entertainment’s blog reporter Tim Boehm spent an epic week working the 25th Anniversary convention of Market America & Conquer’s booth from Greensboro, NC. Soon after, he was on the road again; this time to ‘Philadelphia PA’ where he followed up on rumors of a band who’s lead singer hailed from Norway and was bringing that unique Nordic sound to the local bars and pubs. Night after night he seemed to be one step behind as he followed up on leads but finally, late one Wednesday evening he happened into Bob & Barbara’s Lounge over on South Street near 15th. You know the place, its a dive bar but that night it felt like anything other than that when she took the stage and grabbed that mike. We’re talking about none other than Cris Valkyria. Our senior blog writer Kris Bailey did an excellent expose a few months back on her -> Check It Out Here. So you can totally understand how surprised Tim was when he found out the rumors of Nordic tunes was all about the Valkyrian herself.

After her performance Tim was able to catch her backstage and found out that she was born and raised in Moss, Norway. Cris said that she had lived and traveled the world most of her adult life. This, along with her educational background as a psychologist, her various hobbies like martial arts (2nd Dan, Taekwondo), horses, clothes design, arts & crafts, and passion for most hedonistic pleasures like food, music & arts, are all contributing factors tinting her musical compositions. Her music is ethereal and eclectic and her voice is mostly described as haunting. She considers herself a Musician, mother and psychotherapist. With a distinct Nordic accent intertwined with her English, Tim mentioned that many people in the area seemed to feel her music was ‘not from this place’ to which she laughed. “Right”, she said, “its more than just across the pond, the influences ascend from the lands of the Northern lights.” With a quick smile she said, “må gå” and noticing the quizzical look on his face, stated, “It means I gotta go”. They both laughed and after thanking her for her time, Tim finished up his soda water and organized his notes.

It seems she is following up to her solo EP with a new release! Her very epic debut album with her band, Valkyrians. Word on the street is the fanbase is abuzz.  The album, which will carry an updated version of her original six songs from the EP along with six additional brand new tracks, is expected to gain interest from around the world; from Norway to the States.

The Norway influences are all throughout her music and tonight it was heard all over Philly from a little dive bar near the corner of South St and 15th. Until next time, that was Conquer Entertainment blog reporter Tim Boehm. In her words, (not mine), må gå (I gotta go). Thanks, and hey, do look into her music from the link below.

Back in Brooklyn

Laney is all smiles
The nine views of Lanie

Conquer Artist: Laney Lynx

Back home in Brooklyn, NY, Laney sits comfortably in her favorite sofa as the Conquer Entertainment team of reporters catches up on the latest in her career. Three summers ago, Laney took the stage during Conquer Entertainment’s sponsored stage for Van’s Warped Tour along with fellow CE artist Shira Girl. Her infectious and lush voice mesmerized the crowd with her then first EP, ‘Naked Heart’. Later this performance and that song were featured in countless blogs across the nation.

Her latest single ‘Love Sick’ was a pivotal moment in her career as she combined a new sound that blended in electronic and dance music. As a singer & song writer, she was able to put those dual talents on display with the accompanying music video for ‘Love Sick’. https://youtu.be/5-ivaDExeI0

The YouTube hit video tells the story of a couple brought together by a fortune telling event in which Laney plays the fortune teller to a mysteriously handsome man that has shown up late at her clairvoyant abode inside her Airstream trailer parked in the forest. She begins to read his palms and moves on to the tarot cards, all the while trying to understand the strange attraction to him and the mystical connection they seem to share. She manages to cast a spell, that while it lasts, brings the two strangers into a passionate and mesmerizing intertwine upon the nearby bed.

Looking skyward as her career goes up

“Sizzling Hot!”, she giggles as she recounts how the music video won MTV’s recent competition and inclusion on mtvU: The Freshmen.  For 2017, she’s performed at a number of music series nationwide and at notable events like “Sofar Sounds” and ‘The Family Reunion” acoustic series. While this summer continues to unwind, Laney has managed to inject her feel-good downtempo dance music into ears everywhere. With her refreshing pop hooks, lush harmonies, and sensual bass lines, we can hardly wait to hear her forthcoming ‘Getaway’ EP coming out this week.

Her name is Laney Lynx and her music is creating a buzz and popping up everywhere. Thanks for inviting us to Brooklyn to catch up with you. We’ll catch up with you again soon and next time hope to meet your bassist: Antoine, the drummer: Zach, and Big Tone on Guitar.

‘Learn to Be’ by Brian Mackey

Brian relaxes between songwriting sessions
Songwriting is challenging

Singer/Songwriter: Brian Mackey

When you first meet Brian Mackey, he comes across as a relaxed guy at peace with the world. Asking him to rely what he’s creating lately and his numerous accomplishments gets you smooth responses without any hint of arrogance, this even with his recent success of his track “Are You Listening” in Europe. Brian is more focused than ever at getting his music out to the world to hear. With a growing audience in Germany, Norway and other parts of Europe, he sends his unique voice to wherever the fanbase lives. Building on his own life experiences and of those around him, this singer/songwriter delves into the darkest and saddest places to create a sound that is pop-infused rock mixed with a voice that is reminiscent of the late Jim Croce.  Below is his latest example of that talent in the official release of his latest music video, ‘Learn To Be’.

Brian Mackey knows there are few things in life as brutal as a breakup. Once we’ve become accustomed to the support of a partner, we can find it nearly impossible to stand alone; it’s no great exaggeration to say that we’re forced to learn to walk again. But emotional turbulence has often prompted gripping, forthright art, and Mackey’s latest single is just that kind of a song. “Learn To Be” is an aching, unflinching look at dependence within a troubled relationship – the lament of a man who is searching for a lost sense of self in the long shadow of his partner. It’s exactly the sort of writing we’ve come to expect from Mackey, an earnest chronicler of the human heart whose private reflections always have universal dimensions.

CONQUER TRAVELS TO TIBET

Gomang Monks Chant
Monks perform in USA

Masters of Meditation: The Tibetan Gomang Monks

There are plenty of music sites out there right? And plenty focus on only whats mainstream to their market but at Conquer Entertainment, the world is our stage and today we travel to Tibet to visit with his holiness, the Dalai Lama and celebrate his most cherished hymns as sung by the Gomang Monks.

At Conquer, we cater to music all over the world and we are honored that the monastery has chosen our site to showcase some of their most inspiring hymns. The selection process is a difficult one even with over 2000 monks throughout the religious organization. Only the best voices are chosen to participate in this sacred group of chorales.

According to Buddhist scripture, sand mandalas transmit positive energies to the environment and to the people who view them. While constructing a mandala, Buddhist monks chant and meditate to invoke the divine energies of the deities residing within the mandala.

The monks then ask for the deities’ healing blessings. A mandala’s healing power extends to the whole world even before it is swept up and dispersed into flowing water—a further expression of sharing the mandala’s blessings with all.  Watch below for all of your meditation needs.

The monks travel throughout the US, in hopes of raising money for their monastery. The monastery has an extensive program of care for the young, the old, those in need. Please come with a donation for their good works. You can check out their 2017 tour dates at http://www.tibetanhouse.com/ and support their cause with a purchase of their songs on their Conquer Entertainment site at http://www.getconquer.com/gomangmonks/music#album-singles

CAITLIN KOCH – TURNING MUSIC INTO LIFESTYLE

caitlin koch knows lifestyle marketing
caitlin koch knows lifestyle marketing

Singer/Songwriter: Caitlin Koch

How do you turn music into lifestyle? How do you turn your music career into a marketing stream of revenue? We turned to Conquer’s own Caitlin Koch for some of those answers.

As a Nashville based singer/songwriter best known for her performances on Simon Cowell’s production, “The X Factor, USA” Season 1, Conquer Entertainment caught up with Caitlin and her busy schedule long enough to examine how she is using her brand of music and her lifestyle to reach out to her fans.

“I chased my dream on my own terms. I breathed music and got into songwriting more and more. I felt like the Nashville music community opened its arms to me one friend at a time”, says Caitlin. And from that base of Nashville talent, we see that like so many doe-eyed Jersey dairy cows, musicians are the dairy cows of the music business. If you properly take care of them and milk them carefully, the music and all of its spin-offs end up producing a long commercial life of revenue with gigs, record sales, licenses, more streaming music traction, and all the merchandise and publishing royalties.

Showing her lifestyle in Venice
Caitlin with Motives look

More recently, savvy advertisers have used music and the personalities of musicians in all sorts of ways to market their stuff to the public. Some involve straight-up commercial endorsements, while others create a more subliminal connection between music and consumer. The emotional power of music is considerable, and when music is associated with a certain product or service, that emotional resonance transfers to the product or service itself.

This is largely what lifestyle marketing is about: using music to create an emotional response, which in turn influences the consumer’s choices. In return, lifestyle marketing helps artists find a wider community and potential sales base for record sales, concerts, and so on.

With Caitlin, as in the images above, she shows off her best looks with colors and shadows that mirror the best that Motives cosmetics has to offer. And check out that hot European look on the streets of Venice! Her fans can scour her trend shop on Shop.com to find a purse to match her look or discover some ‘stepping out to lunch shoes’ with those adorable half boots. Either way, her fans love her music and definitely love her look.  There she goes again, turning music into lifestyle and her music career into a marketing stream of revenue!

MONNETTE TAKES PHILLY BY STORM

Jazz Queen - Monnette Sudler

Jazz Artist: Monnette Sudler

A jazz storm is brewing in Philadelphia and who else would you expect to be at the center? None other than Conquer Entertainment’s own Monnette Sudler!

A few weeks ago she put on a concert that still has the city talking. As a Philadelphia-based guitarist, she has all of the skills and protocols that a listener could hope for, but she also has a unique way of captivating her audience by how she travels the strings of her guitar. You’d come out of that concert thinking you’d have a bag full of souvenirs from all the places she took you to on that proverbial jazz cruise.

In her recent Jazz Bridge “Real Book” concert, she showcased why Conquer is so proud to sponsor her as one of our premiere Jazz artists. With Danny Monaghan on drums, Aaron Graves on piano, Cedrick Napoleon doing some sweet bass guitar, and a duo of ensemble members: Diane Monroe – Violinist and Gloria Galante – Harpist, the night was a plethora of talent and instruments that fed the hungry Jazz-craving crowd!

Monnette wows the crowd

Even with its complexity, the auditorial effect consisted of Graves’ growling clusters from the ebony and ivory keys of the piano, the rushing jazz rhythms from Danny’s drums, the all out attack of R&B riffs and splashes from Cedrick’s bass guitar and all along Diane, Gloria, and of course, Monnette taking us to town on strings. Wow ladies, way to bring it home!

All of the compositions came from Monnette and Conquer Entertainment couldn’t be more proud. We’re so happy for Philly and for you because you can click the link below to get more of her music and IF, you weren’t able to attend, why not support her talent by getting a download today?
